Wow, I leave town for a week and all this interesting discussion happens.

Was Reich paranoid, or are conspiracies real?
Both. I've thought about this question a lot, and spent a long time verifying
those aspects of Reich's work that seemed crazy to me: orgone, cloudbusters,
bions, ufos, and yes, a conspiracy by "the Rockefeller interests" to "railroad
me as a tool of their socio-political relations", as Reich put it in a letter to
the chaplain of Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary in a document released by the
prison to Kenn Thomas in a freedom of information act search).
As far as I can determine, all of Reich's claims in his published work have
borne out true, with minor exceptions. There is nothing in the published work
that indicates delusion of any kind. Even the Rockefeller conspiracy, a private
accusation made to friends and trusted associates, is true, which I will
document in a future post.
As for the UFO material, I've interviewed several independant witnesses to the
phenomena Reich described. When he speculated, he made it clear he was
speculating. He depended more and more on subjective impressions later in life,
and I think Contact With Space is his most important book because of that.
But Kenn's FOIA search also revealed to me a depressing document, in which
William Moise, obviously under duress, was forced to sign a "confession" - on
instruction from Reich - to the FBI that he, Moise, may have been an unwitting
dupe of a fascist spy. In fact, Moise had corrresponded with a Japanese art
teacher before the formal conclusion of WWII. The document was dated a few days
before Reich's appeal to the Supreme Court appeal was denied and when he was
facing the reality of a two year stretch in jail.
The fact the Bill Moise and Eva Reich were the only people in the world upon
whom Reich could rely at this juncture makes the "confession" particularly hard
to stomach. It's truly pathetic. Moreover, Reich's last words to Eva Reich, his
daughter, were: "You're a murderer."
Let's face it: when you poke the orgonome with enough spikes, enough times, it
will inevitably contract. Chronic contraction isn't healthy, it's sickness. They
put Wilhelm Reich under the microscope and poked him and poked him until they
couldn't find him anymore.
The real horror is they made him into a perfect example of the principle he
first articulated: "Love, when frustrated, turns into hate." Reich spoke of the
well-known fact that when a person fights against ignorance, injustice and
secrecy or whatever long enough, they often adopt many of the characteristics of
the "evil" they are fighting. They tormented Reich, who fought against Nazis
and Communists, until he was reduced to acting just like a Stalinist, forcing
confessions from innocent people, living under a false identity, and appealing
to government bureaucrats on the grounds of "national security". They won. They
not only succeeded in ridiculing him and silencing him and burning his books,
they turned him into what Reich hated most: the bully, the sneak, the agent.
Who are "they"? They're everywhere. The Rockefeller interests played a role,
just as sure as the FDA-AEC-APA-FBI-CIA-ATIC-AMA-DOE-DOD bureaucratic block did.
There really were Communist agents in the state department (Michael Straight,
publisher of the New Republic when they published Brady's smear "The Strange
Case of Wilhelm Reich" - Straight being a self-confessed member of the Kim
Philby-Antony Burgess Cambridge Stalinist spy cell), the US Air Force really did
send out observation jets when Reich competed with the University of Arizona to
bring rain to the desert (I have the films), Reich really did have members of
Eisenhower's "kitchen cabinet" taking close interest in his work (Lewis S.
Douglas, rancher, banker, uranium investor, Ambassador to the Court of St.
James, board member of the Federal Reserve, as well as the Sloan-Kettering
Cancer Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation), and there certainly was
collusion between the FDA, the AMA and the APA. My God! Peter Mills, Reich's
private attorney, turns up as chief prosectutor? As they say, when a trout turns
up in your milk, it's time to get suspicious.
They "they" also live inside a little corner of you and me, dear OML readers.
When we are forbidden as children to be who we really are, we learn to hide. Out
of this, comes all the conspiracies, secret societies and cabals, with their
handclasps, dues, and hidden agendas. Occult means, literally, "hidden." Who hid
the truth? The solution is to start handling our babies differently, tell them
the truth, and stay out of the kids' way. If we can loosen up and completly
tolerate our kids' joy and rage, we'll start a revolution within twenty years.
If not, I give the planet three generations til closing time.
So I'm not interested in encoding my messages with PGP encryption. I'd like OML
to be open and non-hierarchical. If I want privacy, I'll take a walk in the
woods. These truths are for everyone, even my enemies.
Even if Reich was clinically paranoid a few days before he went to jail, or long
before that, so what? Does that invalidate all of the breathing therapies, body
work, cloudbusting, orgone accumulators, bions & autobiognesis, gentle treatment
of children? No. I think of an analogy of a biologist who studies bugs, maybe a
little nerdy or even neurotic, who is obsessed with bugs, beetles. He fetishizes
bugs and chews them up. He's bughouse. Out of the depths of his
obsession/passion, he writes a paper on the health properties of one particular
bug. Is his claim false, purely on the basis he's obsessed with bugs? Or take
Nikola Tesla, who was weaned at two weeks and thereafter could not stand the
sight of anything bright, soft and globular, who never had a sexual
relationship, who channnelled many of his scientific inventions and who talked
to aliens and dead spirits over the radio. Does that mean alternating current is
a fantasy?
I try to think of mental illness in the same way as I understand physical
illness. Psychosis is much like a broken leg. It's not always the sufferer's
fault. Sometimes it is. Physical disability can be caused by reckless behavior.
But are we individually responsible for environmental toxins? I think Reich died
from the effects of environmental psychic assassination.
