Robert Jemison Van de Graaff is credited with inventing the Van de Graaff
generator that was used in the development of the atomic bomb. He worked at
MIT in the thirties.
The Van de Graaff generator generates electricity by rotating a belt inside
an insulated tower with a metal globe on top. A pair of brushes are set up
with one at the top connected to the globe and the other at the bottom
connected to ground. The brushes are arranged adjacent to but not quite
touching the belt. It's best if the tines are pointed and the faster the
belt moves the better the effect.
A Van de Graaff generator can be built in practically any size and large
ones are used for lightning displays. Son of Electrophorous', Windhurst
machines and other "static electricity" or "electrostatic"
manipulators/generators.
