My understanding is that Einstein lost interest after an assistant suggested
that the effect was due to convection.

I believe I read that it was mentioned in one or more biographies.
Have you read "The Einstein Affair"? It's written by Wilhelm Reich, or
rather it's from the "The Archives of the Orgone Institute, and includes
documents from the encounter in question. It runs about 95 pages and is
available from the museum.
