I don't mean to be contrary to the wishes of the moderator of the Orgonomy
Mailing List, who provides a fine service on our behalf of everyone
interested in the work of Wilhelm Reich, but I don't agree that this list is
on a "downward spiral," or that it needs rescuing by the imposition of the
kind of censorship that is implied in several of Mr. Wilbur's posts,
including this one.
For one thing, I didn't vote that "certain sorts of speech are undesirable,"
so I don't know how he can claim to have reached "unanimous" agreement on
that, or any other of the points in his list.
For another, I don't think this particular list is especially well served by
adopting a "Let's all play nice in the sandbox" attitude, which the moderator
advocates. Messing around with people's lives and the ecological balance of
the planet is serious stuff, and, if a practitioner of cloudbusting can't
take the responsibility or the criticism for assuming such a monumental job,
then he may not be qualified to do the work and should be fired, or, at the
least severely chastised, with the caveat that the situation demands
improvement. For such a practitioner to hide behind a rationalization that
he is the only expert, or that only he is not beholden to anyone, or that
we're all too emotionally sick to be able to critique his work at all strikes
me as extremely suspect, not to be mention exceedingly arrogant.
For yet another, until Carlinsky posted his alert and gave us something to
think about I didn't find this forum particularly interesting. I thought it
was quite boring and that it lacked any focus whatsoever. Why the moderator
has such a great need to sanitize, to control, or to eliminate altogether,
significant discussions in a conference which, by its very nature, is
controversial to begin with, is bewildering. Of course, if this forum is
clandestinely intended to be nothing other than a vehicle for the
self-promotion of one of its primary subscribers, a cloudbuster who obviously
cannot tolerate criticism, then just say so, and let's cut out all the
pussy-footing gobbledygook about free speech, alleged character
assassination, and paranoid conspiracies here-there-and-everywhere.
Despite the twisting and tearing of this conversational thread via conscious
and unconscious attempts to side-step the main issue, there has only been one
major theme broached: the responsibility, or lack of it, among people who do
cloudbusting.
That issue is still on the table, and it will probably always be on the
table. Any suggestion by anyone, including the moderator of this conference,
to retreat from confronting that issue, is not much different than what
happends when an individual hits a wall of resistance when undergoing a
therapeutic process. It's painful, and it discomfiting. But, if you want to
grow, you have to get through that wall.
Jim DeMeo and Joel Carlinsky are different sides of the exact same mirror.
They hate looking at each other, and we may find it painful to observe, or
even to comment on their mutual distrust and animosity, for what has been
happening here is indeed like a family squabble. But that mutual animosity,
in and of itself, is no reason to hide the ugly cousins of orgonomic
cloudbusting away in a closet just so the rest of us can make nice small talk
from here on out.
