Oh, BOY ! I've been wanting to post this quote all week but
was worried that it may not be received well. But now that you've
ASKED for quotes, here goes...
23 March 1937 < Reich was 41 >
"What did they say? That I was a seducer of children, a
psychopath, mentally ill, a charlatan, unreliable, and egotistic.
It's not true. I am simply a small, headstrong boy who
is unable to comply with the stupid rules, that's all !"
p.104
19 June 1938
"The sum total of eighteen years of difficult scientific work -
after twenty-five years of homelessness and transience.
1. I am without a home or passport.
2. Am an emigre Jewish sexologist, scientist, socialist.
3. Have lost my children.
4. Lack the support of a scientific organization.
5. Have been ostracized as a charlatan, swindler, and con man.
6. Have been deserted by the second woman I loved.
7. Deserted by dozens of pupils.
8. Thrown out of two large organizations.
9. Must appear in court to prove my integrity.
10. Am penniless.
11. Have no hope for success during my lifetime-or for children.
But still: The bions were my discovery!
Every opportunity is at hand. It is no longer a question of
weather I am ruined or not. The stakes are high! Shame on me if I yield now
for the sake of "decency" or "love". Unthinkable! There will alwas be women
for me-and friends as well."
p.158-9
May 1939
I am like a moneylender who invested millions on some speculation
that backfired and now has nothing left but a few old, worthless articles
and knows that there are no more profits to be had. Yet he still hopes. Time
and time again he looks back to see whether he can't turn it to his
advantage after all. It is impossible for a cause to be so lost. I lack the
youthfull vigor to admit that a lost cause is really lost.
And so here I sit with a large laboratory and amazing problems and
wait for my sixth emigration, without passport, admired, mistrusted, and
feared. My situation is not an enviable one. Something inside me has broken."
p.210
31 December 19391
"Thus the blood-drenched year of 1939 sinks into its grave. 1940
will proabably be no better. However, 1939 saw the birth of an understanding
of cancer-the first mice were cured of cancer by means of bions. Silently,
far removed from the frenzy of thosenature-alienated beings, creative and
constructive thinking pursues its steady course. It is erecting the pillars
of the future. The privilege of participating in this compensates for all my
loneliness, for all the ridicule and calumny. What does all that matter?
Dosn't spring wter seep through the ground and emerge clear on the surface?
Are not the pure, productive contours of the living engraved upon the infant
who is born in blood and pain? Dosn't the sun emerge strong and bright when
clouds and fog have disappeared? Dosn't each springtime green anew when snow
and ice have melted? And even if all life on this earth were to perish, it
would still exist on other stars, in other worlds. Undulation and convulsion
will never cease! Nor will development! To feel this, yes, to direct it
where it can be directed, is Godlike-if "God" is indeed a valid concept.
Events such as those in 1939 engender an obligation to genuine science.
Good luck in the new year, Willi! You have been pretty brave until
now. Stay that way, and bear the loneliness without becoming a misanthrope."

Pub. Farrar, Straus And Giroux, New York
"Beyond Psychology..." is a GREAT book. It's a collection of Journal
entries and letters from the period. Very revealing and insightfull. I find
it very moving, so much so that i no longer feel like making further comment
right now...
